Imaobong portfolio

This blog documents some of the finished work I have made out of yarn, felt and fabrics and paper. This items were made either as a gift, practice or shop item I sold in my business. I currently have the skills to design and sell, but I want to take it to the next level by learning from professionals who will educate me beyond just making and selling. The critical thinking process of what I do, the sustainability and ethical issues around textile practice.

My knowledge has been confined as most of what I have learnt has been self- acquired knowledge, teaching myself the craft from online sources. My textile practice would focus on the use of yarns to design knit/ crochet wears and accessories , and other accessories like lapel pins and brooches. I would like to design my own yarns as well as and proceed in the future to design jewelries with the use of African fabrics and many more.

It would also be a time to develop my own techniques as most if what I have learnt are other designers techniques, design patterns that can be used to create finished works, as well as think of alternative ways to achieve the end products.

crochet-beaded bow

This bow was made using yarn, beads and an elastic band to go round the head. It was made for a baby girl between the age of 6 months -1 year. The bow was made first and then attached to the elastic band.

The lapel pins  were both made with red felt. The one on the left was made with only felt, whereas the one on the right, I added a bit of fabric. This was made for an adult male and were both sold to the same person based on request.

baby booties

This is a two tone crochet baby booties made with yarn. It was a store item that was sold, sized for 0-6 months. It was made using several stitches double crochet, single crochet, decreases and other techniques.

Croc-Knit Scarf

This Scarf was made using yarn. The end goal was to design a scarf made using both crochet and knit techniques. It was a personal project. I started with knitting and finished up with the Crochet star stitch.

Matching hat and scarf

The hat was made to be ribbed with single crochets and the scarf was made with half double crochets in the third loop to produce the ribbing (not originally my technique, designer is @allaboutami).

This was a try-out project. The aim was to include the Ankara fabric in the design to give it that African texture and color. It would fit a small baby but it turned out more to be a prop for future reference.

Lapel pin

These are all lapel pins for the adult male, all have been sold. The orange, blue and purple were made out of felt, whereas the pink was made made with cotton fabric.

Baby booties

This were also made with yarn for a baby girl, hence the addition of the scallops on the top of the boots. This is a sold item. Its made for the age range 0- 6 months

Scarf and Hat made for the adult male using yarn and crochet. This was a gift item.

I was trying out props for home decoration and decided to design this two to consider if I would add it to my works. Both have been made using yarn and I have accessorized using flowers and gold chain to make it pop. The blue is aimed at decorating one's reading space and the green to be kept in the living room or bedroom to put in current books one is reading, current DVD etc, to keep the area tidy.

Both baby booties were made using yarn. Both were sold to customers.
Both are for babies between the ages of 0- 6 months.

The last two pictures below are brooches made out of yarn
The green is a rabbit brooch and the one below it is a special orange, with pink highlights and its camo- green leaves

Paper tryouts!!!!

Here I was trying to make a flower vase and a bouquet, but I did not have access to a more solid base when the idea came which was in in the middle of the night, so I thought of what to use as a substitute  and thought of paper.

First, I made the pink vase out of pastel art card, it was made like a box but turned to stand upright, and then I added the ribbon.

However, I looked at it and thought it needed stem so I rolled up A4 paper, torn from my sketching pad to look like flowers.

And then I thought, why not add roses, hence the final outcome. If I might add, I preferred the look without the roses.

All works that have been published have been made by me and by hand without the assistance of any machine except tools like crochet hooks, knitting pins, scissors, needles, measuring tapes, glues........
